Sean Manaea Is Staying On The West Coast In 2023

 

The San Francisco Giants are preparing for the possibility of potentially losing veteran left-hander Carlos Rodon in free agency.

Fortunately, they found somebody who could fill the ace role in the event that he leaves.

This morning, San Francisco inked left-hander Sean Manaea to a two-year, $25 million contract.

The 30-year-old was acquired by the San Diego Padres prior to the start of the 2022 season.

In what proved to be his only season in Padres yellow and brown, the veteran left-hander had a disappointing season, going 8-9 with a 4.96 ERA in 28 starts and 30 appearances.

Manaea Signs With Giants

While Manaea had a tough 2022 season, his track record speaks for itself.

In 2021, the lefty won 11 games and posted a 3.91 ERA in 32 starts with the Oakland Athletics.

So at the very least, the Giants have another veteran presence in their rotation and somebody they can slot in next to right-hander Logan Webb.

Manaea also comes at a much cheaper price than Rodon will and is a shorter-term commitment, so it is possible that the Giants could catch lightning in a bottle with this move.

Manaea’s best season came in 2018.

The left-hander posted a 3.59 ERA in 27 starts.

San Francisco won just 81 games during the 2022 season after winning 107 in 2021.

The Giants will look to get back on track in 2023 and potentially regain their perch atop the National League West.

The team finished 30 games back of the 111-win Los Angeles Dodgers, who captured the division title.
