With Willson Contreras off the board, MLB teams interested in a catcher may have to look to the Oakland Athletics‘ roster.

They have an All-Star-caliber backstop in Sean Murphy, but he isn’t particularly easy to acquire.

First of all, he remains the A’s lone trade piece at this point after dealing every star they had.

And second, they don’t have to trade Murphy right now: he may be at an all-time high in value as a 28-year old catcher with excellent recent performance and three years left of team control, but they aren’t obligated to negotiate him yet.

It’s truly painful, however, to see him on that A’s uncompetitive roster.

He deserves a better opportunity to compete, not to mention that his home stadium is not particularly hitting-friendly.

MLB Personality Urges Teams To Get Murphy Out Of Oakland

MLB analyst Mike Petriello had a funny, yet painful request for MLB teams regarding Murphy.

“Just begging someone to rescue Sean Murphy from the Oakland Coliseum,” he tweeted, showing a chart with his performance on the road and at home.

As the chart suggests, Murphy’s production while playing in the Coliseum is fairly mediocre, but he is a star while playing away from home.

Add it all up, and you have a solid catcher who can hit .250/.332/.426 with 18 home runs, a .759 OPS, 122 wRC+ (100 is considered league-average performance) and 5.1 Wins Above Replacement (WAR).

Just a handful of backstops can brag about being capable of matching that stat line.

There are several teams in need of a catcher: the Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Guardians come to mind.

A trade should be materialized sooner than later, though, because the A’s will probably want to pounce on a golden opportunity.

Who will get the talented catcher?
